Field Report: The State of Steel Aces

A full situation report on everything that has changed in Steel Aces since January — new maps, dozens of vehicles, a visual and audio overhaul, big performance gains, and the systems now running under the hood.

Commanders,

Most of our updates put a single vehicle or feature under the spotlight. Today we are doing the opposite: stepping back for a full situation report on everything that has changed in Steel Aces since January. It has been a big stretch – new battlefields, dozens of vehicles, a top-to-bottom pass on visuals and audio, and performance gains you will feel the moment you drop into a match.

Grab a coffee. This is a long one.

Section 01 · Presentation

A New Coat of Paint

A lot of work went into how the game looks, in the hangar and out on the map. Drag the handle below to wipe between the old and new map lighting:

Before After

The lighting rework is ongoing. It is rolling out map by map, so not every battlefield has the new look yet – Harbour (day & morning) is leading the way.

  • Lighting overhaul for the hangar – your tanks have never looked better sitting in the bay (see above).
  • Lighting overhaul for the maps – a work in progress, being applied one battlefield at a time.
  • Tonemapping / colour-grading options so you can dial in the look you want.
  • VFX improvements across the board.
Section 02 · Handling

Handling & Feel

How the tanks actually drive got a real pass:

  • Reworked differential-steering mechanics, vastly improving precision in low-speed situations.

If a vehicle feels clunky at low or high speed, please report it – the differential-steering rework is still fresh, and your reports are how we fine-tune it.

Section 03 · The Arsenal

The Growing Arsenal

The single biggest change since January is the sheer number of machines that have rolled onto the field. New lines and one-off prototypes have joined across the tech trees – German, Soviet, American and experimental – spanning interwar oddities, wartime workhorses and early Cold War heavies. Use the arrows to run through the line-up, and drag any tank to spin it.

Alongside the vehicles themselves, we added the systems that let you make them your own:

  • Vehicle retrofit system – loadout modules (equivalent to equipment) for tuning a vehicle to your playstyle. Available online for now.
  • Customisation – camouflage, stickers and lettering to make your tank unmistakably yours.
  • Assisted loader mechanic, debuting on the SP I C.
  • Updated IS-3M model, rebuilt to our current art standard.

Every vehicle is researched from primary sources and balanced around a role – a striker plays nothing like a brawler, even at the same rank.

Section 04 · Battlefields

New Battlefields

Terrain is a weapon in Steel Aces, and the map pool grew on both ends of the range:

  • Coast – a brand-new theatre of open approaches and layered sightlines.
  • Harbour – tighter, close-quarters lanes through a working port, now getting its own lighting pass (day & morning).
Section 05 · Performance

Under the Hood

For a free-to-play game, performance is the front door – it needs to run well on the hardware people actually own. This stretch brought some of our largest gains yet:

  • Graphics optimisations worth roughly +30–60%, depending on your system.
  • Alpine performance specifically improved, and the frame cost of Impact View reduced.
  • Improved VFX prewarming to kill the stutter when new effects first play.
  • Updated upscalers – DLSS, FSR and XeSS – plus experimental FSR Frame Generation.
  • Improved performance diagnostic report to help us chase down issues on your hardware.
Section 06 · The Hangar

Hangar & Social

The space between battles filled out considerably – starting with a cleaner, clearer hangar UI (above):

  • Hangar UI overhaul (work in progress) for a cleaner, clearer garage.
  • In-hangar chat so you can talk without leaving the garage.
  • Player match history to review how your last battles went.
  • Player inventory for the things you own and earn.
  • Discord & in-game rich presence – show what you are playing, and see your friends' status.
Section 07 · Progression

Economy & Progression

The economy grew into a proper progression loop:

  • Expanded economy – ammo and consumable purchases, vehicle repair, match rewards and more.
  • Vehicle XP to Renown conversion, so surplus experience is never wasted.
  • Booster system to accelerate your progress.
Section 08 · Audio

Sound & Fury

The battlefield sounds the part now:

  • German and Russian voice lines for crews in their own tongue.
  • Audio updates – more engine and gun sounds with more character.
Section 09 · What's Next

The Road Ahead

This report is a snapshot, not a finish line. A lot is still in motion – a game tutorial for new commanders, mission and reward loops, battle rejoin, a basic clan system, further lighting and UI passes, and Linux support further out. We keep the full picture on our development roadmap, grouped by what it touches.

None of this happens in a vacuum. Nearly every change above started as a message in our Discord, a bug report from a playtest, or a thread the community would not let go of. Keep it coming – it works.

See you on the battlefield.
