Dev Log #12: Panzer II Scouts

Two new German light tanks join the roster: the up-armored Panzer II Ausf. H (VK 9.03) prototype, and the purpose-built Panzer II Ausf. L Luchs reconnaissance tank.

Greetings commanders,

This week, we are focusing on two German light tanks moving through our vehicle pipeline: the Panzer II Ausf. H (VK 9.03) prototype and the Panzer II Ausf. L “Luchs”. Both are fast scouts, but their armament differs sharply: the Ausf. H mounts the 2.8 cm s.Pz.B. 41 rather than the 2 cm autocannon carried by the Luchs, and their development stories and gameplay roles pull in different directions.

As with our previous dev logs, you will find a concise historical summary for each vehicle, some helpful context while you wait to get them in your garage, and a look at our Art Team’s latest work.

Panzer II Ausf. H (VK 9.03)

In late 1941, German engineers began work on an up-armored Panzer II to succeed the Ausf. G. The Ausf. H (VK 9.03) was to use the Ausf. G chassis and suspension, but with heavier protection and improved mobility. Frontal hull and turret plates were stepped up significantly from the Ausf. G’s 14.5 mm baseline, with reinforced side and rear protection, and a more powerful Maybach HL 66P engine producing 200 hp gave the prototype noticeably more pace on road.

Only two prototypes were ever completed. Eastern Front trials reportedly tested one with a captured 5 cm PaK 38 gun, but the design was canceled on 27 March 1942 in favor of the Ausf. L (Luchs) project. The Ausf. H never saw combat. Drag the model below to inspect the up-armored hull and the standard Ausf. G turret it inherited.

In Steel Aces, the Ausf. H plays as a transitional scout with a decisive edge: it swaps the 2 cm autocannon for the 2.8 cm s.Pz.B. 41 — a schwere Panzerbüchse (heavy anti-tank rifle) with an automatic feed and exceptional penetration courtesy of the Gerlich principle, which squeezes the projectile from 28 mm down to 20 mm as it travels the bore. That punch reaches well beyond what any standard Panzer II can manage. It also trades a little agility for a stronger nose and a higher top speed than the Ausf. G. Use the tougher front to lead a light flank and the high-penetration gun to disable enemies from cover, but avoid brawls — the armor is still scout-thin.

Panzer II Ausf. L “Luchs”

The Luchs was a true reconnaissance version of the Panzer II, designed between 1939 and 1942 by MAN and Daimler-Benz. Its first prototype ran by April 1942, and in trials that June it outperformed competing Czech light tanks (Skoda T15, Panzer 38(t) n.A.). The hull was slightly widened, the turret enlarged to seat a crew of four, and a Maybach HL 66P engine producing 180 hp gave it strong road pace with a range of roughly 260 km.

Armament was the same autocannon and coaxial MG34 carried by other Panzer IIs. Production began in September 1943, but only 100 vehicles were built before the rest of the planned 800 were canceled. The Luchs served with Panzer-Aufklärungsabteilungen on both the Eastern and Western Fronts. Spin the model below for a closer look.

In Steel Aces, the Luchs is the pure scout of this pair: high speed, good camo, four-man crew with dedicated gunner and loader, and excellent view range, paid for with very light armor and the same light autocannon shared by the rest of the family. Lean into stealth and mobility: dart through cover to spot enemies for your team, flank to harass softer targets, and avoid head-on fights.
