Steel Aces Dev Log #9: A Museum Collaboration

Great news, Commanders – our Fox Armoured Car model is now complete and ready to roll out in Steel Aces! This isn’t just any new vehicle; it’s the result of a special collaboration with the Canadian Tank Museum. Our team worked closely with the museum to ensure the Fox is recreated with unparalleled authenticity. In fact, we matched the vehicle’s camouflage 1:1 to the real Fox Armoured Car on display at the museum – right down to the exact colours and pattern. When you see it in-game, you’re seeing the Fox exactly as it appears in real life at the museum. Built on a 4×4 Canadian Military Pattern (CMP) truck chassis, this scout car also features the unique rear steering controls—a secondary driver’s station with its own throttle, gear shift, and steering wheel—for emergency reverse manoeuvres in case the primary driver is incapacitated.

Bringing the Fox from Museum to Game

Our partnership gave us unprecedented access to reference material. Only seven Fox armoured cars are known to survive worldwide, and the Canadian Tank Museum’s example is considered the most intact. Having such a well-preserved vehicle to study meant we could capture every detail, from its turret shape to the unique equipment fittings. Our artists traced real images inside modelling software, aligning photographs of the museum vehicle directly to our 3D model to ensure every surface, marking and shape matches perfectly.

The Fox’s Role in Steel Aces

Now that the Fox is finished, let’s talk about what it brings to the battlefield. In Steel Aces, the Fox Armoured Car fills the role of a nimble reconnaissance vehicle. It’s light, fast, and manoeuvrable – perfect for scouting ahead and spotting enemy movements. With its compact size and that authentic camouflage, the Fox can stealthily traverse the map, using cover to its advantage.

Players who favour speed and strategy will love the Fox. You won’t be trading heavy firepower or thick armour – the Fox is too lightly armoured to brawl head-on with tanks – but you’ll gain the ability to outflank and outsmart your opponents. Use its quick acceleration to dart between cover or circle slower targets, and relay crucial intel to your team. A well-played Fox can harass unwary enemies, capture strategic points before the enemy can react, and disappear before the big guns can train on it. It truly embodies the ‘scout car’ experience: high risk, high reward, and a whole lot of fun for daring drivers!

Historical Background of the Fox Armoured Car

The Fox Armoured Car (Mark I) was developed by General Motors Canada during the Second World War, using the same frame as Canadian Military Pattern (CMP) trucks. Based on the British Humber armoured car design and built on a 4×4 CMP truck chassis. The Fox carried a relatively light armament and had a taller profile, which meant it wasn’t ideal for heavy frontline combat. However, it performed well mechanically (thanks to its larger engine) and served with Canadian reconnaissance regiments in Italy and Northwest Europe. It earned the distinctive “Mickey Mouse” camo pattern of black bubble spots during the Italian campaign, nicknamed for its resemblance to Mickey Mouse ears. By 1944 the Fox was being phased out in favour of the bigger, better-armed Staghound armoured car, but it remains a notable piece of Canadian armoured history.

That’s a wrap on the Fox Armoured Car! We’re proud to bring this uniquely Canadian scout vehicle into Steel Aces with museum-grade authenticity. Let us know what you think on our Discord server – and don’t forget to tell us which vehicles you’d like to see next in the game.
